There are eleven Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs), or Household Waste Recycling Sites (HWRSs), in West Sussex. When homes have more waste than can be put kerbside with their weekly or fortnightly collections, HWRCs can be a good place to take excess rubbish. But there are limitations to HWRCs, so often, hiring a skip is the smarter option.
There are restrictions on construction and demolition waste
While building, construction, and demolition materials are accepted at HWRCs, the amount you can take per visit is limited at 200kg. If you’re undertaking a home renovation project, or even having a spring clean, it might save you time to hire a skip instead of multiple (and messy) runs to your local HWRC. If you opt for your HWRC, always check the most up-to-date restrictions and limitations – for example, some sites don’t accept plasterboard, other sites only accept wood.
Some type of vehicles are not permitted
If you’ve hired a vehicle to take waste to an HWRC, be aware that certain vehicles are not permitted. These include:
- multi-axle trailers
- horseboxes
- tipper trucks
- flatbed or dropside trucks
- Luton-type vans
Vehicles over 2.2m are only allowed at three HWRCs in West Sussex, so you should always check current restrictions before you travel.
You might need a permit to access an HWRC
If you use a commercial vehicle to dispose of household waste, you’ll need to apply for a permit first. Business and commercial waste cannot be taken to HWRCs – they will be turned away. Three sites across West Sussex will accept business waste at a cost, but often, a skip will be a better and more convenient option for business waste disposal.
Using an HWRC is time-consuming
If you head for an HWRC, you may have to join a queue of traffic to access the site, particularly in times of social distancing. From there, you’ll be personally responsible for sorting the rubbish into the correct disposal areas, whether that’s clothing, garden waste, metal waste, cardboard waste, construction waste, plastics – there are dozens of areas for recycling different items. When you hire a skip, you save time because everything goes into one skip that’s sorted for recyclables once it returns to our site.
When it’s appropriate to use an HWRC
Hiring a skip is a convenient option for waste disposal and can save valuable time. While most items can be put into a skip, some things are not allowed, including electricals, paints, tyres, plasterboard and batteries. Specialist disposal is required for these items, and your local HWRC may have facilities for these items.
